HERE'S HOW TO DO IT
We take a close look at fashion influencer @Sarahjoholder
At a glance, Sarah Jo Holder might seem like just your average 25-year-old woman. But online, Sarah Jo can boast over 150,000 followers on Instagram (@sarahjoholder) and over three million views on her YouTube channel! It’s hard to believe that just one year before she only had 16,000 Instagram followers. That’s a 10x increase in followers in just over a year!
After graduating from university in 2014, Sarah Jo began a small fashion blog as a way of attracting potential employers. But after discovering social media influencers like Zoella and Patricia Bright, Sarah Jo was inspired to invest more time into her Instagram and YouTube accounts. Fast forward a few years, and Sarah Jo has clearly found her niche.
On YouTube, she identifies herself as an OCOS (obsessive chronic online shopper) who is always on the hunt for a good clothing discount. But one look at her Instagram proves that just because she’s spending less on her clothing does not mean she’s lacking in fashion sense!
Want to follow in Sarah’s footsteps? Here’s how!
Although being a social media influencer is a fairly new job, the field is increasingly competitive. It’s easy to get started. All you need is an internet connection. But after that is the hard part. You have to find a way to get noticed in the sea of established influencers as well as micro influencers. Let’s look at some top tips on how to grow your Instagram!
1) First, Work on Creating a Cohesive Aesthetic for Your Feed
Imagine a new potential follower clicking on your profile and scrolling through the feed. This is a lightning-fast glance, and if you don’t make a strong, lasting impression, no one is going to hit the “follow” button. Make sure the photos you have on your profile reflect a single, cohesive aesthetic. If you take a look at Sarah Jo’s feed, you’ll quickly see that she’s established a clear, cohesive look. Figure out what your “look” is and make sure your photos are reflecting that.
2) Strategically Utilize Story Highlights
Part of the appeal of Instagram stories is they’re only on your profile temporarily. But now you also have the option to highlight specific stories so that they’re instantly visible in your profile. If you have a story you’re especially proud of, highlight it. If you posted a story that you think is the perfect representation of your branding, highlight it. Choose stories that people find intriguing. If you look at Sarah Jo’s profile, you’ll notice that she’s highlighted several stories.
3) Engage with Other Influencers
One of the best ways to gain new followers is to engage with other influencers and their followers. Like their posts and comment, but also like the comments on their posts and reply to fellow followers. Put some thought into what you’re saying. If they like what you say, they just might check out your profile and give you a follow.
4) Cross-Promote Your Instagram Account
Find new Instagram followers by promoting your Instagram account on other social media platforms. Have a YouTube channel? Tell your subscribers to give you a follow and include your handle in the description box. Add your Instagram handle in your Twitter bio and link to your Instagram account on your personal blog.
5) Use Hashtags
Using hashtags on your posts and stories is one of the most effective ways for you to gain new followers! Anyone can see your posts if they’re checking out a hashtag you used. You’ll easily gain new followers through the explore page of Instagram. Sarah Jo uses hashtags on many of her posts. Not only can you use successful hashtags, but you can also create your own to start trends and help your followers easily locate your Insta posts.
6) Tag Your Location
Tagging your location is similar to gaining followers through hashtags. Instagram users sometimes check out posts by searching for a certain location. Whether you’re tagging your hometown or your vacation destination, this is an effective way to get noticed on social media. Sarah Jo also uses this method. She’s tagged locations all across the globe from Florida to Greece to the Island of Mauritius.
7) Post Regularly
Consistency is key to gaining a large Instagram following. In the Instagram world, that means you should be posting at least once a day. Sarah Jo posts at least once a day, sometimes several times a day. You don’t want to be pushing content if you don’t have any, but you do want to consistently show up in your followers’ feeds as well as the explore page.
8) Try to Get Featured
Chances are, no matter what kind of account you have on Instagram, there’s a feature account out there that’s all about it. Usually, these accounts will use certain hashtags or simply ask that you tag them in order to locate your posts. If they like what they see, you might get featured and seen by an entirely new audience. So do a little research and find accounts that do this on your area of expertise, whether it’s food, fashion, or something else.
9) Follow Your Role Models
Follow the accounts that you dream of aspiring to! They can be influencers that are just a little more popular than you or ones that you think are significantly out of your reach. Either way, that account will be notified you’ve followed them. If you’re lucky, they might check out your account and follow you back! Let’s assume their content is similar to yours and maybe their followers will love your account too, why don’t you scroll through their followers and like a pic or two to see if it leads to any new interactions. You’ll be surprised how effective this is.
10) Post Ads and Partnerships
Ads and partnerships may come a little later in your time as an Instagram influencer. But if you can find a brand who is willing to collaborate with you on a post, take it. Sarah Jo has done this with many brands (here’s an example!)
The road to becoming an Instagram influencer is difficult. You’ll have a lot of competition. But with hard work, research, and perseverance you can definitely increase your following by 1000%! Sarah Jo Holder did it in just one year. With these tips, we can all do it, too!
Sarah's original interview was featured in the March 2018 issue as the Fashion Project LIVE Award Show Judge, This feature was written by Fashion Project LIVE and does not represent Sarah's words or how she feels about her Instagram growth.
THE RISE OF THE FITNESS INFLUENCER
Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat have completely changed the world we live in. If you stop sipping your latte for a second and look around your favorite coffee shop, you will likely notice that over half of the customers are thoroughly immersed in one of these sites, via their mobile device. Instagram is one of these life-altering sites and unless you’ve been living off the grid with the indigenous people of the Amazon rain-forest, you have heard of it before. As with most of these sites, Instagram relies on followers. The amount of following you have, directly determines the amount influence you can provide and savvy Instagram users can turn that influence into currency. The people who are able to use social media to generate revenue are commonly referred to as influencers.
One of these fast rising influencers is Jamile Desouza-Davies. Jamile is a former professional ballerina turned fitness icon who is the creator of a 4 week, personalized training regiment called Alpha project.
This fitness coach is also a lecturer at Aberystwyth University, with two Masters degrees in management and marketing. She has a huge social media platform, with 150 thousand followers on Instagram. Unfortunately, one day she logged into Instagram to find that her account had been hacked and that her 150k followers had all disappeared to zero.
What would you do?
Most of us would panic, throw a tantrum or both, but not Jamile. She ended up taking her own advice which is to use exercise and meditation to battle and defeat the many stresses of life. It took an entire year for Jamile to get her following back to influencer level. She made it happen while maintaining her composure through exercise and meditation. This is the best way to tackle stress, so here are twelve exercises, one for each month, that you can do to keep stress at bay and stay focused during a crisis like Jamile did.
July 2018: Side Planks
Perform these exactly like a normal plank except Lay on your side with your forearm flat on the floor, line your bottom elbow up directly under your shoulder with both legs straight our. Your feet should be slightly spread unless you need more of a challenge, then feel free to stack them. Use your core to lift your hips off the floor, forming a straight line from your head to your feet. Hold for 20 seconds and repeat on the other side.
August 2018: Knee Raises
Another core exercise that has variable ways to execute depending on your skill level. Most people start with their body weight resting on the arm pads, gripping the handles. Raise your knees to your chest and pause, don’t let the momentum of your body swing you. Return to the starting position. If your advanced, instead of using the arm rests to hold your weight, perform these while hanging from the pull-up bar.
September 2018: Scissor Kicks
This exercise is a staple for your ab day routine and can be done anywhere at anytime, all you need is a floor. This specifically targets the transverse abdominus, hip flexors and lower abs, where your muffin top resides. To perform this correctly, you need to focus on utilizing your core. Start by raising your open legs to a 45 degree angle with your palms flat on the ground. Bring your legs together and slightly cross your feet over, then return to the starting position. Try to hit between 12-15 with 3 sets.
October 2018: Resistance Band Abduction
Hip abductors are a fantastic way to hit those glutes, but you don’t always wanna make that trip to the gym, so what do you do? The solution is resistance bands to make her dance. These bands are so versatile and can be used on almost any muscle group, but what Jamile is demonstrating is hip abduction. This exercise targets those butt muscles to make your yoga pants pop. Its gonna be hard to stay stressed when you have a nice round ass to show off.
November 2018: Leg Extensions
You might of heard several conflicting opinions regarding leg extensions. One minute they’re good for you and the next, they’re the worst possible exercise you could ever do. Personally I'm a fan of ripped quads, and to get those, cranking out reps of leg extensions is helpful if done correctly. The problem is, the leg extension machine puts a lot of stress on your ACL, so it shouldn’t be performed with lots of weight. This is a low weight, high rep machine, designed to isolate your quads and give them some definition.
December 2018: Snowboarding
When you’re seriously bogged down by worry and the regular routine at the local gym isn’t cutting it, you might need to get away and expose yourself to something new. Learning new things can be exciting and that excitement releases endorphins that cause us to feel good. Give your stress a time-out and feel good for a minute. Usually you can come back to the issue with a fresh perspective and maybe the thing you thought was major, was actually pretty minor after all.
January 2019: Kickboxing
If you're serious about your cardio but are also feeling like a trapped hamster on the treadmill, it might be time to switch up the routine and add some kickboxing. You will burn major calories because this works muscles you didn’t even know you had. This is my go-to for stress relief because its really hard to think about life’s problems when you're focusing on whether to throw a left hook or a right uppercut. Before you venture off solo and start wailing on a bag, you should find a trainer or attend a kickboxing class, just until you're familiar with the right stance and punching techniques. You don’t want to become good at doing something the wrong way, so learn it correctly with an instructor.
February 2019: Reverse Grip Curls
Most people understand how to do a basic barbell curl but there muscles that could greatly benefit from adding a slight variation to your form, such as the extension muscles in your forearm when you perform reverse grip curls. When you reverse the grip, the biceps are locked out and you will feel the burn in your forearm instead. These muscles aren’t as strong as the ones in your arm so try to start with a lighter weight and set your target for 3 sets of 12 slow and controlled reps.
March 2019: Tricep Dips
Tricep dips are a must if you want your arms looking anything like Jamile’s. This is another exercise that doesn’t require any fancy equipment, all you need is a bench or a chair. Sit on the edge of the chair and grip the edge next to your hips. Your legs are straight out and your feet should be about hip-width apart with the heels touching the ground. Look straight ahead with your chin up. Press down into the chair or bench to lift your body and slide forward just far enough that your behind clears the edge of the chair. Lower yourself until your elbows are bent between 45 and 90 degrees. Slowly push yourself back up to the start position and repeat. Aim for 3 sets of 12 .
April 2019: Bicycle Crunch
This is one of, if not the most effective abdominal exercises available and it requires zero equipment. Start by lying on your back with your knees bent and your hands behind your head. Move your legs as if you’re slowly riding a bike and simultaneously crunch and twist your torso to that your elbow touches the opposite knee. Make sure to refrain from pulling your neck forward, use your torso instead. This exercise crazy effective because it works your front and side abs, rectus abdominus and transverse abdominus, respectively, as well as working your quads. Three for the price of one. Try for 20 seconds and repeat for 3 sets
May 2019: Push-ups
Push-ups are tricky because they look easy but most people perform them wrong. Ideally you should start on the ground with your feet together and your elbows close to your ribs, not flared out away from you. The latter causes unnecessary strain your rotator cuff muscles and can lead to injury. If push-ups are new to you, they might too difficult to perform in the traditional stance. If you find this to be the case, you can try spreading your feet. If they’re still too hard, try using your knees until you feel yourself getting strong enough to perform them the regular way.
June 2019: Stretching
Stretching should happen everyday. It is amazing for stress relief. When you’re experiencing stress, there’s a good chance your muscles are tense. That’s because your muscles tend to tighten up in response to physical and emotional stress. Stretching increases the blood flow to your muscles to allow improved circulation and helps with recovery from tension. There are two main types of stretching; static and dynamic. Static stretches involve putting yourself in a comfortable position to stretch and hold that position for 20 seconds. Dynamic stretches are more of a warm up. It involves moving the muscles without weight, throughout your range of motion. Dynamic stretches are done before a workout and static stretches are done after.
We asked the beautiful Chantelle to review one of our archived magazines and tell us who her favourite interview feature was.
My name is Chantelle Douglas, I am 35 and live in Bristol. I am also a mother to three wonderful children. I started out my journey by attending a ms curvaceous UK body confidence workshop, to my amazement I managed to get through to the finals and it just went from there. For me being a plus size model is being able to represent the girls/ women that you don't see on tv or in the magazines. I believe everybody has the right to feel good about themselves. I know what its like to experience body shaming it's awful.
Well I speak to the beautiful @ruthcurvemodel on Instagram and came across an article about her, she is stunning and I love everything she stands for, I definitely look up to her.
"I think it's a great platform"
Kerri Larkin is the Fashion Project LIVE Magazine Inspiration Award winner (W2019)
Kerri's interview: I was diagnosed with autism back in 2017, I was scared to tell people because most people do not understand it and it was hard for me to process when I was diagnosed. I am now embracing it and I want to tell other people with autism whatever your talents, let them shine. I am 32 from Northampton and I started modelling 2 years ago. It started off with my extra work and I started looking for TFP photographers. I am now with a model agency called model management. I may be a model with autism but it doesn't define me, it's a part of me. Doing modelling is a way of showing people my sense of style & creativity and how I express myself. I have 2 cats, fifi and fudge and I do weightlifting. I enjoy taking photos of wildlife in my spare time. Also I love having tattoos, it started at 18 and I never stopped. I just feel that you can express yourself with body art as it tells a story.
My advice : No matter what disability you have or mental health . Live your dreams every day is about living in the moment just go for it .

Tianna Williams is the Fashion Project LIVE Magazine Photographer of the Season Award winner (W2019)
Tianna's interview: I am a maternity and newborn photographer based in Birmingham with a deep love for fashion photography. As a Mum of two children aged 3 and 1, I spend my time juggling parenting with the rollercoaster that is running a business. I am a registered nurse and midwife, which is very handy with the clients I usually have and of course is a strong reason for them choosing me as their photographer as they know I am safe and competent. I love photography, I probably spend time on it every single day. Learning, shooting, editing.
My speciality is maternity and newborn, I like to add a flair of fashion and colour to my work which my clients love. I am moving into the Jewellery Quarter next month to start the next chapter in my business life and I am so excited for where I will go next.
Last year, in 2018 I embarked on a passion project that I collaborated with four beautiful models, a talented make up artist, a bespoke jeweller and an incredible stylist - ATUU Embrace, who ethically sources materials from a small village in Ghana to create fashion wear and we sure did create some magic which went on to win incredible awards and accolades.
Someone said to me, feel the fear and do it anyway. I think it is an incredible statement and you know you won't have any regrets. Do what you can to live your passion and your dreams, know that you deserve it. Always remain humble and appreciate the journey as well as the lessons along the way.
Becky Rooke is the Fashion Project LIVE Magazine Make-up Artist of the Season Award winner (W2019)
Becky's interview: I'm 27 years old and I create glam to special effects on myself and clients and upload to social media. I've always been arty ever since I was young. I joined college and did a course for special effects and costume for tv and film. Ever since then I fell in love with make up. I can range from glam, bridal, bodypainting and special effects. I create looks on myself for social media and also a part time freelance make up artist. Always practice, never stop and no matter what others say, do what makes you happy. Upload your looks to social media as a portfolio as you never knows who's looking!
Sheryl English is the Fashion Project LIVE Magazine Nail Artist of the Season Award winner (W2019)
Sheryl's interview: I’m a salon owner working in the beauty industry for almost a decade. I love what I do because I’ve seen how it empowers women by allowing them to express themselves using their bodies as living canvases.
Beauty choices are as limitless as your imagination and we should strive to be innovative whilst simultaneously celebrating our natural beauty and individuality. There really are no steadfast rules. Be brave enough to be yourself in a world of trends. Own who you are and live unapologetically.
Maria Luxe is the Fashion Project LIVE Magazine Model of the Season Award winner (W2019)
Maria's interview: I’m a model, speaker, and body positive activist. I try my best to represent my community as I’m Arabian and you don’t see many Arab models in the media. Modelling has been a blessing and a gift to me. It truly is something that I can wake up to with a huge smile on my face. The best thing about modelling, it’s not just about looking pretty and being able to take a picture... it’s about the connection that you can have with people through an image. In my images I show big girls who have been outcasted (like myself) that we are beautiful, we can be happy, we can wear and be whoever we want to be.
I hope you take the time to sit with yourself and really listen to what you want in life. Life is so short whether we believe it or not. So it’s either you start living now, or you will always wish you lived!
WEAR THAT COLOUR.
BREAK UP WITH THAT GUY!
DELETE NEGATIVE ENERGIES FROM YOUR CIRCLE!
GO AND LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE!
Whoever told you, you can’t, Is a pathological liar.
